Expert Tips
Live natural. Live well.
Changing your life for the better isn’t about one big change, it’s about many little changes. Snacking on something healthy instead of potato chips. Skipping a television show and going for a walk. Getting an extra hour of sleep. After years of working with women, Dr. August has a number of tips that will help you “live a little,” and a little more naturally.
Tips on leading a natural, healthy life:
- Eat your food groups.
If you want a balanced life, it helps to eat a balanced diet. Be sure to get the right amount from each food group: grains, fruits, vegetables, meat and beans, and dairy. Make sweets an occasional treat.
- Don’t snack on empty calories.
For snacks, think protein rich or high fiber instead of junk food. This will keep you feeling full longer, and fuel your body throughout the day.
- Make substitutions.
There are plenty of great ways to reduce calories and fat without reducing flavor too much. For example, when you’re baking, try substituting applesauce for oil, and low fat cottage cheese or sour cream for higher fat milk products. Look for all natural products like Friendship® Cottage Cheese and Sour Cream as opposed to products that are packed with additives and preservatives.
- Work it out.
Exercise for at least 30 minutes, five to seven times per week. Not only will it help your body, it will help your mood as well.
Make exercise fun.
Choose a sport or activity that you enjoy and consider doing it with a friend for extra motivation. Everybody’s different, so try plenty of different things and find what works for you.
- Get serious about slumber.
Try to get at least seven hours of sleep per night. It helps to relax for an hour before attempting to fall asleep. And never drink caffeine late in the day—even if it doesn’t keep you awake, you won’t sleep as deeply.
- Seek professional help.
I may be biased, but there’s nothing better than an expert opinion. Schedule regular check-ups with your doctor, including a cholesterol, blood sugar and weight evaluation. See your gynecologist once a year.
- Lose those bad habits.
If you smoke, QUIT. Limit caffeine intake (one to two cups of coffee per day) and alcohol consumption (one serving per day).
- Stay hydrated.
Your body needs a lot of water to be at its best. Drink six to eight 8 oz. glasses of water per day, and watch out for sodas and alcoholic beverages that dehydrate you.
- Consume more calcium.
Calcium contributes to healthy teeth and helps prevent osteoporosis. Some studies report that increasing your intake may also reduce PMS symptoms. Get your calcium through low fat dairy, and consider taking a supplement if you’re over 35 years old.
